Choosing a workflow
Memory, chat history or a knowledge base?
Chat history lets you revisit a conversation. Long-term memory organizes personal context for future conversations. A knowledge base retrieves information from documents you upload. Choose according to the source and purpose of the information.
Compare the three
| Workflow | Source | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Chat history | A complete conversation | Revisiting a previous discussion |
| Long-term memory | Selected preferences, facts and goals | Personalizing a relevant future answer |
| Knowledge base | Uploaded and processed documents | Answering a question about a source document |
Example: preparing for an exam
In this illustrative scenario, studying for half an hour each evening is ongoing personal context. Uploaded course materials belong in a knowledge base. A full discussion of a practice problem stays in its conversation. These sources can complement each other, but must be checked and managed separately.
Common misunderstandings
- Keeping a chat does not guarantee every detail becomes a memory.
- Uploading a document is not the same as training a base model.
- Deleting a conversation does not automatically delete saved memories.
